Dr. Huseyn Aliyev is an expert on the post-Soviet era, paramilitary armed groups, peace, governance, and institutional transformation in transitional states. His research focuses on Ukraine, Russia, and the broader Caucasus region, with extensive fieldwork involving pro-government paramilitary groups, post-conflict institutional development, and security structures. He also specializes in radicalization, ethno-nationalism, and the internal security and law enforcement systems of Ukraine and Russia. His direct access to frontline actors and state-linked armed groups has made his work a key reference in both academic and policy communities.

He is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow and has previously held academic and research positions at the University of Oxford, the University of Bremen, and Metropolitan University Prague.
